How does the ATEX Directive affect product compliance?

Dutch term: ATEX-richtlijn | Legal basis: Directive 2014/34/EU

The ATEX Directive (Directive 2014/34/EU) governs equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. It covers electrical and non-electrical equipment used in areas where explosive gas, dust or vapour may be present. Equipment is classified by group (I for mines, II for surface industries) and category (1, 2, 3 based on the level of protection required).

Manufacturers must carry out the conformity assessment procedure specified for the equipment group and category (ranging from internal production control for the lowest categories to EU type-examination plus quality assurance for the highest), compile technical documentation, draw up the EU Declaration of Conformity, and affix the CE marking with the specific ATEX marking (Ex symbol in a hexagon). Notified body involvement is mandatory for most categories.

Why it matters for international businesses

For manufacturers of equipment for use in hazardous areas (oil and gas, chemical processing, mining, food processing with dust risks), ATEX compliance is a specialised and mandatory requirement.
