What is the WEEE Directive?
Dutch term: WEEE-richtlijn | Legal basis: Directive 2012/19/EU
The WEEE Directive (Directive 2012/19/EU on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) establishes the framework for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment in the EU. It imposes extended producer responsibility (EPR) obligations on manufacturers and importers of EEE.
Producers must register with the national producer responsibility scheme (in the Netherlands: Stichting OPEN), report the quantities of EEE placed on the market, finance the collection and treatment of WEEE, and apply the crossed-out wheeled bin marking to their products. The directive works alongside RoHS (hazardous substance restrictions) and the Battery Regulation to create a comprehensive lifecycle framework for electronics.
Why it matters for international businesses
For electronics manufacturers and importers, WEEE registration and financial contributions are a mandatory cost of selling in the EU. Non-compliance can result in sales prohibitions and fines.
