Dutch litigation lawyer

Dutch litigation lawyer, Sander van Someren Gréve is a partner at MAAK Advocaten N.V. in Amsterdam and leads the firm's litigation and arbitration practice. He is an experienced procedural law advocate representing mid-market and large enterprises, listed companies, and their shareholders and directors in commercial disputes, product regulation conflicts and international arbitration proceedings.

Sander's primary goal is always to remove legal obstacles so that his clients can continue their business activities uninterrupted. His approach is grounded in the conviction that facts are decisive in the settlement of every dispute: he conducts detailed case analysis before determining the most effective legal strategy, whether that is constructive negotiation, summary proceedings, full merits litigation or international arbitration.

At MAAK Advocaten, Sander leads the litigation team and works closely with the firm's product compliance and commercial contract specialists. This integrated approach allows him to combine deep procedural expertise with substantive knowledge of the regulatory and commercial frameworks that underlie most of the firm's disputes.

Bar registration and continuing education

Sander is a registered Dutch advocate (advocaat) and a member of the Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten (Dutch Bar Association). His Dutch Bar registration covers two practice areas:

  • Burgerlijk procesrecht / Civil procedural law (arbitration, seizure and enforcement law, litigation)
  • Verbintenissenrecht / Law of obligations (agency and distribution)

Sander complies with the mandatory continuing professional education (PO-punten) requirements, earning at least ten credits per registered practice area annually.

Litigation practice

Sander represents clients before all Dutch District Courts, the four Courts of Appeal, the Netherlands Commercial Court (in English) and in international commercial arbitration. His litigation caseload covers the full range of commercial disputes that arise in the manufacturing supply chain.

His litigation work includes:

Product regulation and compliance disputes

Sander's litigation practice has a distinctive focus on disputes arising from EU product regulations. He represents manufacturers, importers and distributors in enforcement actions by market surveillance authorities and in product liability proceedings.

His product regulation litigation covers:

  • Enforcement actions by the NVWA (product safety), the RDI (electronics, radio equipment, cybersecurity), the ILT (transport, hazardous substances) and Dutch Customs
  • Administrative objection (bezwaar) and appeal (beroep) against enforcement decisions including sales prohibitions, recall orders and administrative fines
  • Product liability claims under the Product Liability Directive and Dutch tort law
  • Disputes involving CE marking, REACH, RoHS, the Machinery Regulation, the Battery Regulation and the Medical Devices Regulation
  • Supply chain liability allocation between manufacturer, importer, distributor and other economic operators

Sander works in close coordination with Martin Krüger, who leads the firm's product compliance advisory practice, to provide clients with an integrated response that covers both the regulatory and the procedural dimensions of a product compliance dispute.

Seizure and enforcement

Seizure and enforcement law (beslag- en executierecht) is a core specialisation within Sander's practice. He regularly obtains pre-judgment attachments (conservatoir beslag) on bank accounts, receivables, real property and shares, and handles the enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards through Dutch bailiffs. For international clients, the combination of attachment, summary proceedings and enforcement is often the most effective route from unpaid claim to collected payment.

International private law

Many of Sander's disputes have a cross-border dimension. He advises on jurisdiction and forum disputes under Brussels I Recast, choice of law questions under the Rome I Regulation, service of process abroad, and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in the Netherlands (including the Gazprombank framework for non-EU judgments).

Client base

Sander represents mid-market and large enterprises, listed companies, and their shareholders and directors. His clients include manufacturers, importers, distributors and other supply chain participants, as well as investors, joint venture partners and corporate stakeholders involved in governance or shareholder disputes.

Languages and working style

Sander works in Dutch and English. Clients reach him directly, and fees are agreed in advance on a fixed-fee, hourly or hybrid basis as described on the lawyer fees page.
